The Truth About Halloween

Currently, there are many Christians sounding the alarm about the dangers of celebrating Halloween. On the contrary, there are many Christians who find no issue with celebrating this occasion.

The purpose of this article is not to condemn anyone who chooses to celebrate Halloween. Its purpose is to reveal the truth about this event and its roots.

While there are various interpretations of Halloween’s origin, you will find a common theme of occult practices that are contrary to the Christian faith (Leviticus 19:31; Deuteronomy 18:9-12).

A Quick History Lesson

Halloween originated from an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain (pronounced “SAH-win”), celebrated from October 31 to November 1. Celts believed that the barrier between the physical world and the spiritual world was the thinnest during this time, allowing more interaction between the living and the dead.

Druids or Celtic priests believed that this heightened presence of spirits would make it easier for them to predict the future. Celts would light bonfires, burn crops, and offer sacrifice to their deities. They wore costumes to honor the dead and as disguises or protection from evil spirits. Also, food was left outside to keep unwelcome spirits at bay.

Popular Halloween traditions that we see today evolved from many of these practices.

The Obvious Is True

There is no denying that Halloween, as we know it today, is rooted in the spirit of darkness, and the world is not shy about demonstrating that. Stores are decorated with artificial skeletons and ghosts, and theme parks and attractions are transformed into places for fear-inducing entertainment. Even if it is solely for entertainment, why would we, as Christians, help promote a kingdom or agenda that we are called to expose (Ephesians 5:11)?

Is It Really That Deep?

It is important to know that the devil doesn’t play fair (1 Peter 5:8). What may seem like an innocent day of fun for children and families is used as an opportunity for the enemy to wreak havoc in the world through heightened witchcraft and demonic activity. Unfortunately, our personal intent does not change his overarching agenda. Knowingly or unknowingly, if we partake in any occasion that is rooted in darkness, we are compromising our faith.

Okay, But How Do I Explain This to My Kids?

We don’t give children enough credit for what they can understand at a young age. Instead of yielding to the fear that your children will feel left out, tell them the truth. Teach them about the cost of following Jesus. We cannot do everything the world does (Romans 12:2; James 4:4), and that’s the bottom line.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect” (Romans 12:2).

I believe this day gives us a great opportunity to do what is contrary to popular customs and share the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. What will you do?
